Traveling with pets has become more than a trend—it’s a growing lifestyle choice for millions of Americans. In fact, 78% of U.S. pet owners now travel with their furry companions each year. This shift is prompting the travel industry to adapt, with over 75% of U.S. hotels now offering pet-friendly accommodations. From luxury stays to budget-friendly options, many hotels are going beyond basics—some even have resident “directors of pet relations” (yes, dogs!) to welcome pet guests. Globally, 60% of travelers now bring pets along on holiday, reinforcing the universal appeal of pet-inclusive travel.
However, it’s not always smooth sailing. About 58% of pet owners say traveling with pets presents challenges, especially when flying. As a result, many prefer road trips—though 29% admit their dogs can be a distraction while driving. Alaska Airlines is currently leading the way in pet travel, flying over 100,000 pets annually. Meanwhile, the pet travel services market hit $1.8 billion in 2023 and continues to grow, showing that this is far from a passing trend. For a stress-free trip, experts recommend planning ahead, booking pet-friendly lodging early, packing your pet’s essentials, and brushing up on local regulations. With a little prep, pet-friendly travel can be a rewarding experience—for both humans and their four-legged companions.
